Daughters of St. Colette  (DOSC)

Meeting of Monday, June 21, 2010

Ruth called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM and led the group in opening prayer.

Ruth introduced Cindie Schneider, Executive Director the Hands Foundation as the speaker for the evening.   The Hands Foundation was founded 15 years ago by Donald Simpson, who recently passed away on April 3rd of this year.

Cindie informed the group that the Hands Foundation is a private foundation in Medina County.  The Foundation makes information available for older adults, age 62 and beyond.  They have a newsletter that is produced six times a year and is available for free.  The foundation also has a program called “Senior Wishes”.  All seniors in Medina County are eligible to participate in the program that grants wishes to older adults (e.g. dinner out with friends, furnace fixed, install bathroom rails, prom dress for a grandchild, etc.)

Another program is the Farmers Market Nutrition program.  Twice a month those in the 185% poverty level can get transportation to the Farmers’ Market to buy nutritious foods, twice a month.  Another program is the Life Pouch, which was formally called The Vile of Life.  This is a magnetic pouch that contains a person's medical history and is for the Emergency Medical Teams when needed.

The Hands Foundation is also an advocacy group for people who have no one to assist them in various ways.

She stated 95% of the budget goes back into the programs.  Fundraisers are held throughout the year and she mentioned one coming up on August 10th, a wine and cheese event at Plum Creek Assisted Living complex on Marks Road in Medina. The cost is $10 per person for wine/cheese and entertainment.  (The group voted to attend this event.  Jeannie Grimes will get details on how to pay, etc. and sign up sheets will be available.)

DOSC will  be making a donation to the Hands Foundation.

No formal committee reports were made.

Jeannie Grimes mentioned that the next DOSC dinner out is on August 24th at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills Golf Club on Rt. 303 in Valley City.  Sign up sheets will be available.

She also mentioned she will get information in the play “Into the Woods” being performed by the Royalton Players at Holy Redeemer in North Royalton.

Ruth stated DOSC and the Holy Name Society will be selling bricks to create a path to the shrine now located in the south side of the lot.  The cost will be $25 each, for 3 lines with 20 characters each line.  They will be on sale probably through Christmas, with installation scheduled for next Spring.   She thanked Bill Gorey for getting the shrine completed so quickly.  She invited all to stop by to see the shrine after the meeting.  Weather permitting, Friday’s mass will be at the shrine and the shrine dedication will be on August 15th.

Ruth said volunteers are needed for the parish picnic set for July 11th.

She informed the group Joe Cupla, son of Aileen Armstrong, is serving in the military in Afghanistan.  She said Aileen received a list of items he would like to share with the troops there.  Recently the DOSC sent a care package to him and will do so periodically.  She asked if anyone
